With the First Four of March Madness’s premiere game starting today, we find ourselves reminiscing about the previous years. 2018 was one such year held in high regard, seeing as how it was the year the world got to see the ‘”Pie Top II’s.” A high-top sneaker made for Pizza Hut by custom sneaker legend Dominic Ciambrone aka The Shoe Surgeon.
Seeing as how the Hut was the NCAA’s official pizza, it comes as no surprise that the brand didn’t want fans to miss out on the games, even if it was to order or pick up fresh pizzas. Pizza Hut came up with a revolutionary second take on a sneaker that lets wearers order pizzas with a button’s push. Unlike the first iteration of the Pie Tops, 2018’s Pie Top II gives users two buttons. One to order a fresh pie and another to pause the live games, so fans don’t miss out on the madness while they pick up their pizzas. Both of the buttons were hidden on the tongue and enabled users to connect via Bluetooth to their phone to order pizzas and via WiFi to their streaming services to pause the games when need be.
The shoes were made in a minimal collection of 50 pairs and were made available on HBX.com. The ‘Final Four’ pairs of these 50 were auctioned on eBay. The shoes were crafted using suede, patent leather, nubuck, and gum soles, among other materials. The two colorways, Wheat and Red, each captured the elements that go into a Pizza. From a wave of marinara beginning at the heel tab and flowing through the side panels. To the Cheesegrater mesh that donned the sides of the Pie Top II’s, each shoe element was curated to perfection.
Their limited run and choice branding made them a grail for sneakerheads worldwide, with pairs selling for as high as $4000. Having received both criticisms for their extreme resale prices and ‘in your face’ colorways to acclaim their branding. One thing is for certain; The Pie Top II’s left everybody ‘Tongue-tied.’
